Video Premiere: Miguel “Adorn”

Yes, y’all. When you least expect it: BAM. Video Premiere. From Miguel no less! –a bone-dafied superstar, on the verge of going supernova before our very eyes. Here is what you need to know about what your very eyes are seeing (above):  1) “Adorn” is the next leak from Miguel’s forthcoming full-length Art Dealer Chic, Vol. 1 (cover art after the jump–painted by Miguel himself!). 2) According to Mr. Unlimited, ADCV1 drops on 3 to the 3rd power (that’s the 27th of this month for anybody who’s not named Algebra). 3) The song is dope (had not listened through the first 6 bars before females in this office were saying “What is that? Can you send me the download link? But how can I get it?”). 4) The video is something like a motion graphic of the above-mentioned painting, or as Miguel himself put it:

Audio: J1 “Slang Talk” (from Starship 27, Vol. 2)

You may have read our Rest-In-Power wishes towards the recently departed Master Blazter drummer Javon “J1″ Coleman  (see his last known performance on video here) but if  you never got the chance to see Dam-Funk & MB perform live, you may not have known what dude was all about. That stops now. To get an idea, check this instrumental track “Slang Talk” (stream below)–an outtake from the Starship 27, Vol. 2 compilation on Insect Records which drops in digital and vinyl form March 29th. Curated entirely by J1, the comp features the work of OKP stalwarts ranging from Black Spade & Coultrain to Houseshoes to Eric Lau to Kev Brown to Georgia Anne Muldrow (not to mention Dam-Funk himself and the third blazter in Master Blazter, Computer Jay). *More importantly* proceeds from the sale go towards Javon’s family. Like somebody wise once said, you never know what you’ve got ’til it’s gone. Now we know.

Video: Eric Benet “Real Love”

Eric Benet is back in R & Bibbity mode, turning the full soul-power of his intensified falsetto on this new jam “Real Love.” Building to a crescendo that somehow reminds me of the Ohio Players’ “You And Me,” this is destined to be a wedding slow-jam for many years to come. Starring cute old couples and Benet himself looking like he just ripped the black tie off his tux in a fit of love-jones the video from director Micheal Rainin does its best to break your heart as well. This is the 1st single from Benet’s 6th LP The One, due out later this spring.

Audio: THEESatisfaction “QueenS”

Though brand new on the scene, Seattle duo THEESatisfaction already have some heavy cosignors on their lease on life: the only guests featured on Shabazz Palaces‘ SubPop release Black Up, they are also working on a short film with OKP’s favorite filmmaker/writer-at-large dream hampton. Besides rapping and harmonizing in a Pointer Sisters-y way, members Stas and Cat also make their own beats. Their own SubPop debut awE naturalE is slated for a March 27th release so expect more neutron dances from these sisters soon. Stream “QueenS” below via PF

Video: Lupe Fiasco Speaks On Kicks, Books and Music

Lupe Fiasco is a pop star on the rise and we knew that his personality was big enough to contain both “Vans spokesperson” and “Occupy Poster Boy” comfortably–but did you know he had his won book club, too? This Q&A with High Snobiety–who caught Lupe on camera while behind the scenes at a Vans event in Berlin–goes deep on his taste in footwear, (Vans, duh), subversive literature and music, in that order. Surprisingly (or not) he talks about jazz, punk and reggae (“liberation rock” to him) a lot more than rap–but it’s his taste in books which really provides the meat of the conversation. Watch and learn.

Audio: Stalley “God’s Child”

Stalley comes through with another warm up jawn to hold us down as we wait for Savage Journey to The American Dream. Listen to the Block Beattaz produced joint “God’s Child,” which serves as  the third song in the Ohio emcee’s series, Songy by Me, Stalley. This is good, but “Cash and My Cutty” is still my favorite from all these leaks thus far.

Video: The Roots “Ain’t Gonna Let Nobody Turn Me Around” [Soundtrack For A Revolution]

As we mentioned around MLK day, the soundtrack for Soundtrack For A Revolution–the revelatory documentary about the music of the civil rights era which prominently features OKP family-members The Roots, John Legend, Anthony Hamilton, and Angie Stone not to mention Wyclef, TV on the Radio, Joss Stone and a mess of other great artists–is about to drop in CD form (pre-order on iTunes now) on February 14th (love’s gonna getcha!). In anticipation of this historic (literally) collection of amazing music we are proud to present the complete performance of “Ain’t Nobody Gonna Turn Me Around” from The  Legendary Roots Crew with Tunde Adebimpe and Kyp Malone from TVOTR on the back-up. Enjoy above and New York heads, check back early next week for more info on a local screening of the film coming up soon!

Audio: Trae Tha Truth “I’m On 2.0″ feat. VA

I applauded H-Town emcee Trae The Truth for somehow getting Lupe Fiasco, Big Boi, Wale, and Wiz Khalifa all on the same track (and in the video as well, for that matter), for what culminated into a very strong posse cut. Today, Trae comes right back with version 2.0 with a handful of emcees that I mostly fux with (mostly). Take 5 minutes out of your day and listen to “I’m On 2.0″ featuring Big K.R.I.T., Jadakiss, J. Cole, Kendrick Lamar, B.o.B, Tyga, Gudda Gudda, Bun B, and Mark Morrison (Cyfyre on the beat).

Video: Nas x The Roots “Nasty” Live on LNWJF

So we saw Nas kill a live performance of “Nasty” in that frigid Aspen weather earlier this week at the X-Games. This time around, Nasir takes his gutter raps indoors to Indianapolis for a more comfortable performance of the track on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon. Nas stays right in pocket as The Roots Crew give a spot on live rendition of the track (as they’re known to do). In case you’re confused by the venue change, LNWJF is live on location at the Super Bowl this week. Can we get a release date on that new Nas album, please?

Audio: J Dilla “Clap Your Hands” [Unreleased Bling47 Freestyle]

In addition to compiling our OKP D’Angelo Live mixtape Sam Champ put me up on the launch of the new site from Bling47, which Detroiters and other slum villagers will recognize as a front organization for the nefarious activities Waajeed from Platinum Pied Pipers. Along with some cool videos Waajeed threw up a few straight-to-cassette J Dilla productions which he’s been keeping in a shoebox somewhere, waiting for someone to invent file-sharing. Among them was this freestyle, titled “Clap Your Hands,” or possibly “Listen To This” which–to my knowledge–has never seen the (computer) light of day before now. As ‘Jeedo put it:
