Method Man was recently asked about Drake’s 2013 hit “Wu-Tang Forever,” and the superstar lyricist gave a candid response. During an interview with 7PM in Brooklyn with Carmelo Anthony, Meth explained that he respects Drake as an artist, but he explained why he and his Wu brethren decided not to appear on the track that was titled in tribute to the legendary Clan.

“I like Drake, I think he’s a dope artist,” said Method Man. “He puts out some great music, obviously, [otherwise] he wouldn’t be as big as he is. But when he sent the record… some [of the] brothers was trying to write to it and shit, and I’m sitting there like, ‘I don’t like it.’”

Method Man went to explain that he was also confused by the connection. He didn’t quite understand why Drake called the track “Wu-Tang Forever.”

“I was like, ‘What does this have to do with Wu-Tang Forever?” he said. “I’m not questioning his artistic ability or anything. I’m just saying, for my taste, I was more or less like, ‘I’m not getting on that.’”

Meth’s feelings echo what Inspectah Deck said at the time.

“Before I heard the song, I looked at my Twitter and I seen my Twitter blowing up,” Deck told HipHopDX back in 2013. “Everybody talking about ‘Drake this, Drake that.’ So I’m like, ‘Well, what happened? Why are so many people coming at Drake? Ain’t that a tribute? Ain’t that love? Ain’t that respect?’ And I got a crazy backlash after that on some, ‘Nah, man, it ain’t no tribute. It ain’t this, it ain’t that. Maybe it’s a publicity stunt, he’s trying to use y’all.’ That ain’t what I was thinking, ’cause I ain’t hear the song.”
