SZA’s Not Charity has partnered with the Los Angeles-based restaurant Jon & Vinny’s to provide 1,400 free meals for people who are struggling in the midst of the government shutdown and as their SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) benefits run out. The restaurant announced the initiative on social media, with the Grammy winner following suit.
“Yall know how much I love Jon and Vinny’s !!” SZA wrote on Monday, Nov. 10. “But it ain’t no fun if the Homies can’t have none !!”
Each meal will be available at the restaurant’s 4400 W. Slauson Ave. location from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. through Monday, Nov. 17. SNAP recipients are asked to email notcharity@jonandvinnys.com to sign up for a meal; up to four meals are available per family.
“Last week @sza reached out to us with an idea and now, with her help, it’s a reality. Over the next 7 days we are partnering with her NOT Charity to provide 1400 free meals (100 dinners for 2 per day) for Los Angeles community members who receive SNAP,” the restaurant posted.
On Monday, the Senate passed legislation aimed at ending the shutdown, and CBS News reports that the House Rules Committee advanced the bill early Wednesday morning after turning down Democratic amendments, including one aimed at extending expiring health insurance subsidies. The final legislation extends funding for most agencies until Jan. 30, and includes three full-year funding bills for some parts of the government. House Republicans are confident that the package will clear the lower chamber. President Trump is expected to sign it, which would end the shutdown.
As Americans continue to wait things out, millions have been at risk of losing their government assistance and going hungry; there have also been massive air-traffic issues. This is all happening as winter weather begins and just two weeks before the Thanksgiving holiday.
