Cam’ron Says He Didn’t Want to Do The LOX Verzuz Battle

The 49-year-old says that he only took part in Dipset’s 2021 showcase against The LOX out of solidarity and to be “a team player.”

The LOX and Dipset Verzuz battle was arguably the high point of the popular viral series. Taking place in New York City at Madison Square Garden, the battle became a victory lap for The LOX, and Dipset’s Cam’ron recently said that he wished that his group hadn’t done the show. While discussing bad decisions on an episode of the It Is What It Is podcast, Cam made it clear that he regrets doing Verzuz.

“I can name a lot of decisions that wasn’t good because I was trying to be a team player,” Cam explained. “I should’ve never did the Verzuz, I told n***as don’t do the Verzuz.”

While The LOX definitely seemed to win over public opinion during and after the Verzuz appearance, both groups saw a surge in their streams on digital platforms like Spotify.

The LOX saw 3.4 million U.S. on-demand streams of their songs the week after the battle, according to MRC Data, up 215% from 1.1 million in the week prior. Within that span, The Lox peaked at 1.4 million on-demand streams the day after the contest, a higher sum than they’d earned in the previous seven days combined (1.23 million). The Diplomats saw their songs generate 2 million U.S. on-demand streams after the show, an improvement of 117% from the previous week’s sum of 919,000.

But Cam says the moment wasn’t a good choice for him–one that he only made because he was trying to be “a team player.”

“It was the wrong decision that I made,” he explains now. “No more of that… I’ve tried to be a team player a lot of times, but that’s the first thing that came to my brain when you said ‘wrong decisions.”
