22 year old R&B singer Tinashe has shared a brand new mixtape of all new material entitled Amethyst. The 7 track release features production from Ryan Hemsworth, Ritz Reynolds, Legacy and more, further honing the tender, almost-ambient sound that the vocalist has been developing over the last three years.
Opening number “Dreams Are Real” features broad, non-stop bass and swirling synthesizer work, recapturing the future-R&B air that Tinashe has become increasingly excellent at. With gorgeously layered vocals and soft inflection, the vocalist asserts “The future is mine,” repeatedly as the track slowly fades–a claim that the coming months and years are only going to get better. All that coasting drains into the moody knock of “Wrong,” which once again sees Tinashe’s superb vocals charting a course through a dark R&B patchwork. Following tracks “Something To Feel” and “Wanderer” gesture at the swaying, wounded work of Frank Ocean’s Channel Orange. Across almost every track on Amethyst, Tinashe moves away from the hands-up joyride of hit single “2 On” and toward a more complicated, self-aware place;this is mature music that belies Tinashe’s tender age.
Currently Tinashe is criss-crossing Europe on an extended international tour and is preparing the full length follow up to her debut LP Aquarius. Stream her excellent Amethyst mixtape below and stay tuned for more.
