When Jesse Boykins III dropped his brilliant 2014 LP Love Apparatus, the samba-tinged "Wonder Years" became an immediate highlight. With its sepia-tinged piano and compounding vocal harmonies, "Wonder Years" is both a rocker and a bit of respite, a bit of fresh open air on an album that's otherwise loaded with hyper-dense arrangements.
Now, Boykins has shared a brand new video for the track, a moving slideshow of images taken while on tour, in the studio, amongst friends and in the company of lovers. Boykins himself is seen on screen quite often, but it's the others around him that really make the video so captivating; we get the sense that this is a photo diary of Boykins life as he sees it--colorful, blurry at times and always in some sort of motion. Some familiar faces including Vic Mensa, Theophilus London and Kilo Kish can be caught along the way. Compared to Boykins's previous videos, including the abstract futurism of "Show Me Who You Are" and the backseat seduction that was "Our Tonight is Mine," the new video is a touchingly wholesome, human offering. This is Boykins at his most tactile--a man who appears flawed on film. Just like the rest of us. Watch the new video for "Wonder Years" below. Buy Love Apparatus on iTunes today.
