The Official 'Ghostbusters: Afterlife' Trailer is Here and It's Brimming with Nostalgia

The Ghostbusters sequel is due in theaters on November 11th.

After a series of delays and a smattering of teasers, Ghostbusters: Afterlife is officially on the release calendar. And today, the direct sequel to the paranormal comedy classics finally has a proper trailer that's brimming with nostalgia.

In the latest Afterlife preview, there's something strange in a very rural neighborhood and the next of kin in the Spengler family (Stranger Things' Finn Wolfhard and The Handmade's Tale's Mckenna Grace,) are tasked with the getting to the bottom of it. But before they get to shooting up the town's undead occupants, they encounter a number of ghouls and ghosts that plagued their grandfather (the late Harold Ramis,) in the pair of iconic '80s films. There's callbacks to the Stay Puft Mashmallow Man (now deliciously bite-sized grocery store demons,) Slimer (somehow still tormenting pedestrian after being captured twice,) and the hilarious Ghostbusters commercials filmed by the original foursome (appearing as a relic of simpler times in a Youtube window.) You'll also catch a faint tease of the original team's return at the very end. According to IMDB, nearly the entire original cast is featured in the film, including Ernie Hudson, Dan Aykroyd, Sigourney Weaver, and yes, even Bill Murray. Sadly, no sign of Rick Moranis, though.

Outside of all the obvious references the original films, Ghostbusters: Afterlife is also connected to the source material via director Jason Reitman, son of Ivan Reitman, the helmer of the series-starting movies. And apparently, the elder Reitman is in full approval of his son's vision. "My father hasn’t been leaving the house much because of COVID. But he took a test, put on a mask and drove down to the Sony lot to watch the movie with the studio. And after, he cried," Reitman recalls in an interview with Empire.
