Happy Friday, good people. A righteous Release Day unto you.
After nearly a month of delays, Jesus is King has only just arrived. And, of course, it's already causing a Rap Twitter meltdown. But thumb theatrics and redemptive gospel raps aside, there's plenty of non-Kanye to go around as well.
Chicago's LUCKI turned in his second glistening trap triumph of the year with Days B4 III. BRAINFEEDER's Teebs returns Annica, a, frankly, gorgeous ambient soul album for the west coast camp. Skateboarding-star-turned-rising-shout-rapper Na-Kel Smith delivered a bundle of off-kilter cuts on 3000nakteen. Rex Orange County's major-label debut, Pony, is a potent and proper intro to a worthy guardian of the pop songbook. And Big Ghost joins Westside Gunn and Conway for the grit-and-grime-loaded, Griselda Ghost.
On the singles side of the week, Doja Cat stormed back with the southern-funk-fortified "Rules." Smino tipped a feather-furnished cap to Miami rap queen, Trina, with his latest Kenny Beats-blessed loosie. Little Dragon is full-float on the glitchy, purple-crushed, gem, "Tongue Kissing." Frank Ocean debuted his first original solo single since 2017 with the spacious, synth-and-sweat-soaked, "DHL." zack villere delivers a warm, warped and winding loosie, with "soar throat." And that's just half the script.
