Stevie Wonder, Chance the Rapper, Thundercat, & More Performed at Dave Chappelle’s Block Party in Dayton, Ohio
Dave Chappelle showed out for Ohio.
Dave Chappelle held a massive block party in Dayton, Ohio on Sunday, August 25. The block party, which functioned as a benefit concert to honor victims of the mass shooting that occurred on August 4th, was called Gem City Shine and it was free. It featured performances from Stevie Wonder, Thundercat, Chance the Rapper, Talib Kweli, Chris Rock, Teyana Taylor, and more.
Chappelle lives close to Dayton — in Yellow Springs, which is about 20 miles away. So it was a time to show out for his home state. According to the Associated Press, he told the audience:
Don’t forget what this place is about! Mankind learned how to fly in this city. Don’t forget what this place is about. When the rest of the country was all slavery, everybody was free in Ohio.
It was also Chappelle's birthday on Saturday. At one point comedian, Jon Stewart came out and sang happy birthday to Chappelle, with the help of the crowd. (The day before, Kanye West has a special Sunday Service birthday song rendition for the comedian.) Because of the occasion, the mayor of Dayton, Nan Whaley, declared it Dave Chappelle day:
