As we reported, Questlove recently took advantage of the United States' new slightly-open door policy on Cuba to book himself a lost weekend in Havana. Sensing an historic opportunity, our hero set off on a one-man goodwill mission of cultural exchange that comprised two nights of DJing at La Fabrica de Arte Cubano--plus an extra day for vinyl-based cultural research, reminiscing/re-tracing the steps of The Roots' 2002 performance at Havana's Teatro America--and generally getting a tour of the most inspiring culture the island capital has to offer, from cigars to Cuban soul. In Questlove's case, we all know his main inspiration comes in the form of drums, not to mention records with drums on them. As fate would have it, Questo's day off in Havana happened to coincide with International Record Store day, so a major portion of his time in-country was spent in cratedigging mode, making some incredible finds and scooping up what appears to be all the records in Cuba. That hands-on education in the A-Z of Cuban vinyl made the perfect introduction to his next stop, the legendary EGREM Studios, the birthplace of--literally--all the records made in Cuba during its golden age of post-revolutionary son.
There was much, much more to The Roots drummer's Cuba Quest, including a chance to reconnect--and bust a beatbox/freestyle a capella duet--with the artist who opened for the Legendary back in '02. But you'll have to wait for the full OKP TV mini-doc to get all the imported goods. For the moment, get a sneak preview via this teaser clip which gives a healthy tasting of all the goodness mentioned above, plus a feel for the incredible degree of rhythmic love Questo gave--and received--on Fabrica de Arte's dancefloor. Watch below and check back tomorrow for the full experience!
