Lee Fields and The Expressions
Lee Fields & The Expressions just released a video for their soulful cover of JJ Cale's "Magnolia." The video was directed by Leon Michels--Brooklyn's own Truth & Soul label co-owner--and features cinematic shots from a frigid afternoon in Williamsburg and landscape shots from Plainfield, NJ. The intimacy captured in the video could only be produced by two long time friends; Fields and Michels. "Magnolia" is an uplifting song that still haunts with tones of longing and sadness. The video brings the feeling of the music to moving pictures. Lee Fields has been in the music business for close to 45 years, having released his first single in 1969. There are very few musicians today who can say they've been touring and recording for half as long as the soul singer.
That evolution of the soul genre can be heard on Lee Fields & The Expressions new album Emma Jean set for release on June 3rd. Producers and label heads Jeff Silverman and Leon Michels placed artists that have worked with Jay Z, Adele, Liam Bailey, Ghostface Killa, Aloe Blacc and Sharon Jones behind the record creating an unmistakeable sound. The formula for the updated soul sound is "sticking to the raucous-yet-tender voiced soul music Lee Fields has always made, yet updating it - pushing the boundaries of what it can be." The sound is being stretched into something else and can't be classified as a throwback. Lee Fields schools the many artists who want to emulate the swagger of the '60s with these 11 authentic tracks. Lee Fields & The Expressions cannot be stopped! They head out on a summer tour starting with the May 29th record release show and the Bowery Ballroom in NYC. Watch the "Magnolia" video and check out tour dates below.
