Pass The Popcorn: New Amy Winehouse Documentary Is On The Way

Lenny Kravitz, Grace Jones, Lauryn Hill, Lion Babe, Thundercat, SZA & More Rock The Afropunk Festival 2015 in Brooklyn, NY.

The short, fiery and ultimately tragic life of soul legend Amy Winehouse will get a proper documentary treatment this summer. Director Asif Kapadia has just confirmed that a new feature, entitled simply Amy, will debut this summer and feature in-depth reporting, interviews and footage from both recording sessions and live performances. Winehouse, who through her entire career had a less-than-tranquil relationship with the media, will be put under Kapadia's microscope, and the results should be thrilling for not only her fans, but anyone who appreciates bold artistry and soul music.

A sparse website has been set up for Amy, which includes a poster and the promise of a trailer in the near future. Additional details are still scarce at this point, but with the UK release date set at July 3rd, it's reasonable to expect that more information will be shared very soon. Unfortunately no North American premiere date has been confirmed.

Kapadia's past experience lies primarily in smaller, independent film. He won numerous accolades for his 1997 short The Sheep Thief and in 2010 his feature release Senna won almost universal acclaim. How the director tackles Amy Winehouse's tumultuous life and unforgettable music catalog will unquestionably be a story to watch as the summer draws nearer. Stay tuned for more updates on Amy, and while you're at it, relive one of her greatest studio moments.
