The Round-Up: Best Songs of The Week - ft. KAYTRANADA, Free Nationals, Kamaiyah, and More [Playlist]
Happy Friday, good people. And a righteous Release Day unto you. 2019 may be weeks away from a welcomed close, but two of the year's most anticipated drops are sharing the 11th-hour spotlight.
Announced just days ago, KAYTRANADA's sophomore album, BUBBA, has arrived out of the deepest damn blue, radiant as hell with no slouch in sight. Not to be outdone by an occasional collaborator's star-studded sneak release, Anderson .Paak's live band, The Free Nationals, has shared their lushly soulful self-titled debut. And VHOOR's five-track MPBEATS tape is an ace-level, albeit abbreviated, set from the Brazilian beatmaker.
But the loosies carried a week short on long-plays. Moses Sumney's full-float and entrancing-as-ever on the dreamboat ballad "Polly." Benamin's "Sunshine" is a day-starting jolt of funk from the underground r&b maestro. LORD RAJA taps into the "Triple Threat" era circuit board on his pulsing and purple new single "The Franklin House." Keenyn Omari's first official release, "Fxckin Up_," is a warm and confessional intro to a prolific NYC-based producer and multi-instrumentalist. And Kamaiyah appears to be signaling new album mode with her true-to-form, G-funk-fortified anthem, "Still I Am." But that's just half the script.
