Freddie Gibbs x Madlib - "Deeper" [Official Video]

It was a long, long wait for the Freddie Gibbs and Madlib collab LP to drop, but that time finally came and the summer has been saved. Today the duo dropped the official video for the Piñata standout "Deeper", a string-heavy slow strutter that dropped last winter and has seen heavy rotation at Okayplayer headquarters ever since. In the clip Gibbs stars as a self-reflective convict thinking back to the pistols, cash and beautiful woman that he had in the past. Gibbs gets released from the bighouse, but things aren't what they seem: his former lady has a son (a Freddie jr., perhaps?) and a new main man. Things get violent at times and emotional at others and Gibbs's face pendulums from rage to regret as the stopwatch snare keeps time. Visually it's a perfect fit for the track—and for Piñata as a whole—a heavy heart beating behind bared teeth. It's almost the Illmatic lockdown tale of "One Love" come to life on screen ("I heard he looks like ya / Why don't ya lady write ya?"), but make sure you watch to the end. Things might not be as bad for our hero Freddie as they first seem.

Piñata broke necks and dropped jaws when it dropped back in March with its symbiotic brew of Madlib's avant-soul production and Freddie's no-holds-barred lyricism. (Not to mention a guest list that reads like a hit parade of modern hip-hop; everyone and their damn roommate is on it.) Gibbs is currently on the road touring North America (dates here) while Madlib, we can only assume, is busy out on the left coast cooking up his next batch of sonic sweets. The Piñata instrumentals LP just hit the digital shelves today and will be out physically June 17th. The weather is heating up; time to get in the drop-top, turn off the GPS and bump to MadGib.
