Like most jokes in 2020, the commotion surrounds a thread about the COVID-19 vaccine. On December 5, Twitter user @lottidot replied, accusing the government was using the vaccine to change our genetic code.

The tweet was an instant classic, and with not much else to look forward to, the jokes came in droves.

"This disease was created in China," she wrote, "and was only supposed to attack us, then a guy altered it to make it attack everyone. It's worldwide, but the [government] ain't handling it as they should [because] their ultimate motive is a vaccine to alter our genetic code."

When asked what the government would gain from doing such a thing, @lottidot revealed the larger plan at hand, effectively saving 2020 for part of the world's population.

“As Black people, genetically we are stronger and smarter than everyone else,” she tweeted. “We are more creative. On December 21, our real DNA will be unlocked and majority will be able to do things that we thought were fiction. Learn who [you] are as a people. They wanna make us average.”

As the clock struck midnight on the 21st, the jokes began to flood in. Phrases like "December 21," "Negro Solstice," "Soulstice," and "Black Twitter" began trending on Twitter.

For followers of astrology, December 21 is actually a significant date. The Jupiter-Saturn conjunction in Aquarius has been named "the great mutation," signifying a new 200-year epochal shift. Whether or not this translates to Black people unlocking some sort of superpowers remains to be seen. In the meantime, we're just enjoying the jokes.
