The film director never once referred to Trump directly.

Donald Trump took to Twitter Monday morning after the Oscars to call out Spike Lee for his speech. After winning his first Academy Award of his career for Best Adapted Screenplay for his movie BlacKkKlansman, Lee gave a speech that thanked his ancestors (most notably his grandmother who put him through college) and encouraged people to mobilize and vote for the 2020 presidential election.

At no point was Trump directly addressed in Lee’s speech. Still, Trump bashed the director.

“Be nice if Spike Lee could read his notes, or better yet not have to use notes at all, when doing his racist hit on your President, who has done more for African Americans (Criminal Justice Reform, Lowest Unemployment numbers in History, Tax Cuts, etc.) than almost any other Pres!” he tweeted.

Trump’s remark could’ve also been in reference to a comment Lee made after the Oscars. As Newsweek reports, a reporter asked the director about how BlacKkKlansman has “changed society” as many people were unaware of the presence the Ku Klux Klan has in today’s society.

Lee replied by referencing Trump’s stance on the Charlottesville, Virginia, riot that occurred in 2018.

“That car drove down that one street in [Charlottesville], Virginia, and the president of the United States did not reject, refute [or] did not denounce the Klan, Alt-Right and Neo-Nazis,” Lee said. “This film, whether we won Best Picture or not, this film will stand the test of time being on the right side of history.”
