A guide to the week’s most essential cuts.
With Fright Night behind us, and midterms just ahead, we’ve landed at the sweet spot between two of the most emotionally exhausting points of the year. A perfect opportunity to buckle down with Release Day’s finest, just before shit gets wild.
It’s been a fruitful — dare I say, stacked — seven-day stretch. New albums arrived from Action Bronson, Swizz Beatz, Vince Staples, Metro Boomin, Takeoff, and the dynamic duo known as Fetti (Freddie Gibbs and Curren$y,) wrangling hip-hop’s heavyweights for a multitude of anthems, psychedelics, trap trimmings, and their various, shamelessly enjoyable, intersections.
The procession of singles was heavy-footed. Leikeli47 returned to the world with a trio of razoring and righteous rhythms. Theophilus London and Tame Impala tried their hand at Steve Monite’s resurgent Nigerian disco dagger “Only You.” Mariah Carey delivered yet another reminder of her continued reign in slick and syrupy r&b. Thundercat, BADBADNOTGOOD, and Flying Lotus, toasted to BRAINFEEDER’s 10th year in rotation with a celestial slow-burner. ricky retro, The Samps, and Onelight, proved the dance floor can be a needed source of therapy with their respective house heaters.
