Pete Rock's MPC Skills Are On Full Display In His New Clip For "Cosmic Slop"

"Cosmic Slop" is the latest single from legendary hip-hop producer Pete Rock. It's also as good a phrase as any to describe the man's aesthetic. Rock has turned his affection for syrupy bass and crooked drum hits into a hip-hop cornerstone, and his sound has remained consistent for decades--a cornerstone of hip-hop. It's a disorganized logic, packed and sprinkled across the bar line at weird intervals. It also grooves hard as hell.

Earlier today Pete Rock released the new music video for "Cosmic Slop," a sparse black and white affair that features the producer doing exactly what you'd expect: rocking an Akai MPC3000, banging out snares and hi-hats in real time. Directors Jay Brown and Zack Kashkett are to thank for the video, which splices in shots of Rock roaming New York City, gazing out at the busy clamor of urban life.

But it's the beatmaking that's at the heart of this video--just as it's always been at the heart of Rock's career. "Cosmic Slop" is the third track on the producer's upcoming LP, Petestrumentals 2, which is due out June 23rd on Mello Music Group. Preorder the album on iTunes today and watch the new video below.
