On Wednesday night, Robert Glasper dropped the first single from his upcoming album, Black Radio 3. “Better Than I Imagined” features H.E.R. and Meshell Ndegeocello. In a statement about the track, Glasper writes that he intends to showcase healthy relationships in his music.
“Black lives matter and so does black love;” he wrote. “No one wants a life without love, but we have generations of people in our community who haven’t had the tools to actually be in healthy relationships. It seems like people are finally ready to open their eyes to systemic racism in this country, and if we’re going to talk about it, we have to also talk about how it affects our relationships–how we communicate, how we see ourselves, how we treat each other. It’s not always good, even though maybe it could be.”
The artists boast 27 Grammy nominations between them, with Glasper and H.E.R. taking home three and two honors, respectively. The first Black Radio won Best R&B Album in 2012, while the sequel was nominated for the same prize two years later.
“While working on Black Radio 3,” Glasper tweeted, “I wanted to drop something early for the times. This is a song I did with my two amazing friends.”
Gianni Lee and Marvin Lau contributed to the song’s visualizer.
Most recently, Glasper dropped the Dinner Party project with Terrace Martin, 9th Wonder, and Kamasi Washington. Glasper also teamed up with Martin and Leon Bridges for “Sweeter.” The two performed the track at the virtual Democratic National Convention.
