A month or two back Talib Kweli graciously allowed Okayplayer full access to his rapperness for one full day in the life–a day that happened to be the day before his new album Prisoner Of Conscious was, so to speak, released. The afternoon portion of that very, very long, very, very productive day was spent on the corner of Myrtle and Tompkins in the heart of do or die Bed-Stuy, Brooklyn. Kweli was there to shoot some key sequences of his Slick & Sam Sneed-directed video for the song “Hamster Wheel,” including a tightly choreographed arrest-by-an-undercover-DT scene, some hydraulically-powered lowrider action and Kweli’s cameo appearance as the narrator of the story, revealing himself at the very end of the cautionary tale. We’re happy to say the official video for “Hamster Wheel” premiered on MTV last night and can now be watched in all its gritty glory below.
Its always kind of surreal to be there for the behind-the-scenes and then see the actual front of the scenes but it was quite a shoot and quite an experience–resulting in quite a video, as you’ll see. Most of all, though, its inspiring to watch Kweli as an independent artist masterfully juggling the one million different moving parts to his own career like a one man industry–and then see all one million pieces click together to form the final product when the curtain goes up. Watch and enjoy–and to experience that double-vision sensation for yourself, scroll down to watch the full Okayplayer TV day-in-the-life of Talib Kweli webisode.
