Erykah Badu apparently being devoured by Wayne Coyne of The Flaming Lips

A few minutes ago we received the following statement from Erykah Badu via SMS, a duplicate of a statement she linked to from her twitter just about an hour ago, and time-stamped 3:33pm CST today–for clarity, some hours after Wayne Coyne of The Flaming Lips released a statement of apology for leaking the video for their collaboration “First Time Ever I Saw Your Face,” apparently without approval from Ms. Badoula or her little sister Nayrok, who also appears in the video. For the benefit of Badu fans, we reprint it here in full without comment or edits. Read after the jump:

@waynecoyne then… perhaps, next time u get an occasion to work with an artist who respects your mind/art, you should send at least a ROUGh version of the video u PLAN to release b4 u manipulate or compromise the artist’s brand by desperately releasing a poor excuse for shock and nudity that sends a convoluted message that passes as art( to some).
Even with Window Seat there was a method and thought process involved. I have not one need for publicity . I just love artistic dialogue . And just because an image is shocking does not make it art.
You obviously have a misconception of who I am artistically. I don’t mind that but…
By the way you are an ass.
Yu did everything wrong from the on set .
You showed me a concept of beautiful tasteful imagery( by way of vid text messages) .
I trusted that. I was mistaken.
Then u release an unedited, unapproved version within the next few days.
That all spells 1 thing ,
Self Serving .
When asked what the concept
meant after u explained it , u replied ,”it doesn’t mean anything , I just want to make a great video that everyone is going to watch. ”
I understood , because as an artist we all desire that. But we don’t all do it at another artist’s expense .
I attempted to resolve this respectfully by having conversations with u after the release but that too proved to be a poor excuse for art.
From jump,
You begged me to sit in a tub of that other shit and I said naw. I refused to sit in any liquid that was not water. But Out of RESPECT for you and the artist you ‘appear’ to be, I Didn’t wanna kill your concept , wanted u to at least get it out of your head . After all, u spent your dough on studio , trip to Dallas etc.. Sooo, I invited Nayrok , my lil sis and artist, who is much more liberal ,to be subject of those other disturbing (to me ) scenes . I told u from jump that I believed your concept to be disturbing. But would give your edit a chance.
You then said u would take my shots ( in clear water/ fully covered parts -seemed harmless enough) and Nayrok’s part ( which I was not present for but saw the photos and a sample scene of cornstarch dripping ) and edit them together along with cosmic, green screen images ( which no one saw) then would show me the edit. .
Instead, U disrespected me by releasing pics and rough vid on the internet without my approval. (Contract breech )
That is equivalent to putting out a security camera’s images of me changing in the fitting room.
I never would have approved that tasteless, meaningless, shock motivated video .
Our art is a reflection of who we are . I have no connection to those images shot in their raw version. I was interested in seeing an amazing edit that would perhaps change or alter my thoughts . Never happened .
You also did the same thing with the song itself which displays crappy “rough “vocals by me . I let it go , perhaps iiiii was missing something, I thought.
I Should have followed my first mind back in studio when recording the vocals “your way”.
( Red flag.) It was uncomfortable.
For that I am at fault .
Consequently, brother, As a human I am disgusted with your what appears to be desperation and poor execution. And disregard for others . As a director I am unimpressed . As a sociologist I understand your type. As your fellow artist I am uninspired. As a woman I feel violated and underestimated.
Hope it works out for ya ,Wayne.
Really i could give a shit less.
Still love your live show tho.
And , you’re welcomed.
Lesson learned .
By the way I have guested in very few videos. But I have always been given the opportunity to see the edit and contribute to it when my roll is substantial. Not this time .
I guess u feel it better to apologize than ask for permission and be refused . Hey, Love u man, but your ways are not very nice .
O, And on behalf of all the artists u have manipulated or plan to manipulate, find another way .
These things have been said out of necessity.
And if you don’t like it
you can KiSS MY Glittery ASS .
O and Nayrok told me to tell u to kiss her ass too .
Almost forgot. –Peace, Ms. Badu (Analog Girl’s Magnetic Strip Club)

hmm, so what does this say to all the Baduist who were actually trying to interpret and validate the artistic integrity of this…uh.. video?

Thank you for your comment! I totally agree with you. I was disturbed and appalled. I saw so many people post this on FB saying that they loved it! But when I searched for more Flaming Lips videos I noticed a trend. All of the women, of color, were naked. It was exploitation. What’s interesting to me is that she initially didn’t say anything about this video. All she said was that the naked images were those of her sister. She didn’t seem to disrespected by it until later. What’s up with that?

WORD!!!!! i effin LOVVVVE Badu, but was pretty disturbed/disgusted with it AND I AM NOT THAT CONSERVATIVE AT ALL! i was trying to interpret it; such as 1st verse –> reference to sun in eyes –> glitter. Okay.
2nd verse —> reference to heartbeat —> blood. Nasty, but okay.
      3rd verse —-> reference to making love/laying —> o_O WTF?! *vomits*

So i’m actually glad to hear that it was unedited and NOT with Erykah’s approval. The only thing that gets me is how her sister was a little TOO into it, especially the last scene. Nonetheless, f*ck that pompous ass Wayne muhfukka for playing her. And before some idiot says “she played herself” sometimes you feel you have artistic trust with people so you don’t ALWAYS see mofos backstabbing you. i think it’s a lesson learned for Badu tho.

I knew something was off about that video… didn’t think Erykah would do something without a message. #firstmindshouldbethelastmind

  • JB

thats alot of nonsense to read. why didnt she just say i dont approve of the video.

  • AquaNu85

peace and blessings to Badu and Nayrok…..I believe this long text you call “nonsense” was not intended for you the #blogreader….he tried to take a piece of mind so she gave him a piece of her mind..btw you can KISS MY FAT ASS TOO Wayne..peace

  • Which video is the picture at the top from?

  • Saurus

Just seen that video, it’s still available through the WSHH player if you can find it. Gotta say it’s not a very tasteful picture, the glitter bits were okay, the blood & semen parts were discusting to my eyes, and I’m no prude to artistic nude.
Erykah seems pretty hypocritical and Diva-like at quite some times to me. This tweet has diva dripping all over it, but I gotta be on her side the video fails as an art statement and looks like shit, also I truly understand that she feels violated as a woman (the semen part, dear lord).
The Flaming Lips were a good band in my opinion but this vid (and song tbh) are not their shining examples.

Also, Wayne tweeted a response: https://twitter.com/waynecoyne/status/210517374519091200
    Not very classy…

  • aishe

Does anyone else think that Erykah might of been high or drunk during this rant? U stepped into this arena. Take full and complete responsibility for ur choices. #PointBlnakPeriod

  • kidtruth

I’m not gonna lie, I think Wayne is a genius. I’m not surprised he is hard to work with, but if you trust a deranged (but brilliant) artist like Wayne to work with you then you’ve gotta be open to different results.

  • I propose to those loyal Badu fans to “boycott” the video. Don’t watch it, don’t tweet it, don’t “like it” until the video has been revised to the artist’s satisfaction.
Ms. Badu I’m sure, as an artist, always have her fans in mind when creating whether it be a song, a video, and even though this was somebod else’s vision they knew the value she would bring yet they shortchanged themselves. We as fans have some kind of say here as well besides commenting. Boycott!!

    • the video has been taken down for now, so whatever your feelings about it, watching it is not an option for the moment.

  • Will

    classic Hollywood publicity stunt…(applause)…yawn.

  • Yowzers

I don’t have any dog in this fight, the video and song seemed horrible to me. I liked a couple of songs off of one album by the Flaming Lips, but overall have not really ever gotten it. On the other hand, I love the whole “Badu needs to have a message, from the earth” bullshit. Badu’s rant was total crap and she reminds me of the same woman that some of my boys who grew up in Dallas would tell me about her, may have a head wrap, but still a diva of the highest.

  • Gary Jones

She stated it 2006 that she would never be buck naked with glitter on to sell her music.

  • Oyin

I don’t care if it was unedited, her nor her sister should have gotten buck ass naked for a video. As many videos that get leaked these days, she should know better. It’s not like she’s young and naive. She really changed my opinion of her. I’m quite disappointed.

I am just selfishly happy finally seeing Eraka’s snatch…. just saying. If I was Andre3000 I would be quite upset.
