Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five’s Kidd Creole Charged w/ Murder

Hip-hop legend Kidd Creole, 57, who was one-sixth of the pioneering group Grandmaster Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five, has been charged with murder after stabbing to death a homeless man.

According to the Daily News, Creole, whose real name is Nathaniel Glover, was going to his job as as a handyman and security guard, in Midtown, New York City at a little past midnight on Tuesday night.

That is when he ran into John Jolly, a homeless man. TMZ said Jolly called Creole a gay slur, which enraged the elder hip-hop statesman. According to a Daily News source, Creole felt like Jolly was hitting on him:

““They had words. Things got out of hand. It was some sort of diss…He turned, interpreting that the guy was making an advance toward him…One thing led to another, and he shivved him twice in the chest.”

Jolly was rushed to Bellevue Hospital Center, where he died. He was 55. Creole was apprehended by police, largely because of a surveillance video.

Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five are one of the most important figures in hip-hop history. In 1982 they released their magnum opus, “The Message,” the first truly conscious hip-hop song. In 2007 they were the first hip-hop group to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
