Cynthia Erivo Reacts to Her 2020 Oscar Nominations: “I Wish I Was in More Diverse Company”

If Erivo takes home an Oscar this year, she will officially be an EGOT winner.

Cynthia Erivo has responded to her nominations for two Academy Awards for her role in Harriet

Erivo’s depiction of the iconic figure Harriet Tubman in Kasi Lemmons’ biopic received an assortment of reviews after the film dropped last year, she received one nomination for Best Actress. Her other Academy Award nod is for her song “Stand Up” in the Best Song category co-written with Joshuah Campbell. 

In an interview with Billboard, she shared, “it was the most surreal and exciting moment I’ve had for a really long time.” If Erivo wins one Oscar, she will become an EGOT winner since she has previously won a Tony, a Grammy and an Emmy. The New York Times reports she has managed to swipe these well regarded awards in less than five years.

Despite this celebratory moment, she is well aware that she is the only black entertainer nominated for an Oscar this year. Speaking on this topic, she states:

“This happens a lot to black artists, specifically, and also artists of color who are marginalized or pigeonholed and that sort of thing, and that shows up in the nominations. I wish I was in more diverse company, I will say that.”

She also shared, “Too often, we wait until people are gone to give them their roses. I think now we have an opportunity to start celebrating them whilst they’re here. There’s so much great work from the women in our industry and other women of color, other men of color that also deserve to be lauded and celebrated.”
