The “Break My Soul” Mash-Ups Aren’t Sitting Well With Azealia Banks

In an Instagram Story, rapper Azealia Banks called out unofficial remixes of new Beyoncé single “Break My Soul,” calling them “horrible.”

Azealia Banks isn’t one to bite her tongue. On Thursday (June 23), the rapper made an Instagram Story criticizing the mash-ups of her material with new Beyoncé single “Break My Soul.” On social media platforms and YouTube, a handful of Beyoncé and AB fans have made remixed versions of “Break My Soul” by blending the two women’s music together, including AB’s 2021 track “Fuck Him All Night,” which set her off.

“Please for the love of God. Stop the “Break My Soul” AB mashups,” the rapper wrote on her Instagram Story. “They are horrible.”

While AB isn’t in favor of her music being mixed with Beyoncé’s new track, others went to Twitter to celebrate the rapper for incorporating house music into her work, especially on 2012 EP 1991.

On Tuesday (June 20) Beyoncé released “Break My Soul” from her forthcoming seventh album Renaissance which arrives on July 29. Incorporating samples of “Show Me Love” by Robin S. and “Explode” by Big Freedia, “Break My Soul” was co-written by Beyoncé, The-DreamChristopher Alan “Tricky” StewartJAY-ZAdam Pigott and Freddie Ross, whereas “Show Me Love” co-writers Allen George and Fred McFarlane are also credited.

Earlier this month Banks performed at Wynwood Pride in Miami, cutting her set short when dry ice was used during her performance. According to PEOPLE, the rapper shared in a Twitter thread that she was allergic to dry ice and during the performance she was lightheaded to the point where she could “barely stand.” Last Friday (June 16), AB released new single “I Rule the World,” while her last project Yung Rapunxel: Pt. II came out in 2019.
