Aisha Hinds Cast As Harriet Tubman For 'Underground' Season 2

Aisha Hinds Cast As Harriet Tubman In 'Underground' Season 2

WGN America debuted a show earlier this year called Underground that's centered around the Underground Railroad in Antebellum, Georgia. A lot happened in the 10 episode first season, as a group of Georgia slaves decide to embark on a journey for freedom.

But the best moment was right at the end of the last episode, where Rosalee (one of the main characters) returns to the south to help others make it to freedom, and meets the one and only Harriet Tubman.

As most of us know Tubman was an iconic abolitionist and the Underground Railroad's most famous conductor. An informal but well organized system that was composed of free and enslaved blacks, white abolitionists and other activists, the Underground Railroad was integral to her escape from the south. She also served as an armed scout and spy for the United States Army during the American Civil War, as well as an active participant in the struggle for women's suffrage.

So, it's safe to say that a certain somebody has to play Harriet Tubman, because those are some big shoes to fill. Well, now we've finally learned who'll be portraying the historical black hero.

In a report from DeadlineAisha Hinds (All the WayRunaway IslandAssault on Precinct 13) has been cast as Tubman for the forthcoming second season of Underground. This new season begins right where the first one ends, as a divided America prepares for civil war. Production on season two begins Monday in Savannah, Georgia, with a tentative premiere date for early 2017.

Joining Hinds for season two are returning stars Jurnee Smollett-Bell, Aldis Hodge, Christopher Meloni, Alano Miller and ‎Jessica de Gouw. Amirah Vann, who recurred in the first season, has been promoted to series regular for season two. Recurring guest stars Jasika Nicole, Michael Trotter and Jesse Luken will also be a part of the forthcoming season.
