Here’s Why Pharrell And Justin Timberlake Haven’t Worked Together Since ‘Justified’

Justin Timberlake has not worked with Pharrell since his 2002 debut solo album Justified. Now, in a recent interview with Beats 1’s Zane Lowe, Timberlake spoke on why the two just recently started working together again, and it involves the singer’s ties with Jive and Clipse.

“I gotta say this the right way because I don’t wanna blame anyone for anything,” he begins. “Everyone remembers Clipse. Clipse was signed to Jive Records, which I was signed to. I don’t know what went on with their deal, but I do remember that Pharrell was very adamant about getting them out of the deal. So, from my understanding, it became challenging for him to work with any Jive artist from that point.”

Timberlake then goes on to explain that while he wanted to work with Pharrell he was apprehensive about getting in between the producer and label because of a prior experience he had during his time in N*Sync (who he refers to as “the group”).

However, now that Timberlake is with RCA Records, he has begun working with Pharrell again.

During the interview Timberlake also addressed the Super Bowl controversy that occurred when he performed with Janet Jackson.

“I stumbled through it, to be quite honest,” the artist said. “I had my wires crossed and it’s just something that you have to look back on and go like, ‘Ok, well you know, you can’t change what’s happened but you can move forward and learn from it...'”

Timberlake then said that he and Jackson have made peace since the incident.

“…I don’t know that a lot of people know that,” he said. “I don’t think it’s my job to do that because you value the relationships that you do have with people.”
