NYC Creatives: Win a 6-Month Workspace at Freecandy (And Donate to the Cause)

Lenny Kravitz, Grace Jones, Lauryn Hill, Lion Babe, Thundercat, SZA & More Rock The Afropunk Festival 2015 in Brooklyn, NY.

Freecandy Creative Space is a creative coworking community, gallery and venue located in Brooklyn’s Clinton Hill, a neighborhood deliberately chosen three years ago by founder and executive creative director Todd Triplett. As he notes: “massive success stories have come out of this community and are still here.” Actor and activist Jeffrey Wright and musical duo denitia and sene are just a few of the faces you might see in the richly multicultural artistic community.

At a time when creatives are being called upon to stand up and produce work that matters (we hear you, Questlove), having Virginia Woolfs proverbial “room of one’s own” -- but within a community of like minds -- could be imperative to igniting revolutionary creativity. As stated in their mission: “We believe that creative collaboration is the primary source from which innovation and ideas are sparked.”

Okayplayer is excited to give our readers the opportunity to win one of two 6-month memberships (worth $1,500 each) to join Freecandy and help to further build their collective of writers, photographers, designers, record labels heads, and more.

To enter: Simply tweet "@[yourtwitterhandle] is #okaywithfreecandy." Be sure your website, Facebook or other link can be found in your profile (or in the tweet) and that it includes an email address we can use to contact you. We’ll select a small group and invite you to submit a short paragraph on what you'd endeavor to accomplish with your six months as a member.

In the case of Freecandy, membership undoubtedly has its privileges. Their process is a rightfully selective one, typically done through referrals and recommendations, to ensure a great community and a common creative perspective. “We’re hitting on all systems and stoked about where we can go,” says Triplett. “We want to be part of that ecosystem that feeds emerging artists into the larger scene.” To achieve that goal, they launched an Indiegogo campaign to help fund renovations to the space. The fundraiser ends December 6 (tomorrow!) at 11:59pm PT, so please support NOW, watch the video below and let us know if you’re #okaywithfreecandy.
