The fight against Joe Rogan continues. On Monday evening, India Arie took to Instagram to announce that she will be removing her music and Songversation podcast from Spotify. The singer cited not only Rogan’s COVID misinformation, but also his “language around race” during a 2021 episode of The Joe Rogan Experience and Spotify’s unequal payment standards.
“I have decided to pull my music and podcast from Spotify. Neil Young opened a door that I MUST walk through. I believe in freedom of speech. However, I find Joe Rogan problematic for reasons OTHER than his COVID interviews,” she wrote. “FOR ME IT’S ALSO HIS language around race. What I am talking about is RESPECT — who gets it and who doesn’t. Paying musicians a Fraction of a penny? And HIM $100M? This shows the type of company they are and the company that they keep. I’m tired.”
According to MediaMatters, Rogan’s “language around race” notably occurred during a podcast episode with psychologist Jordan Peterson.
“Unless you are talking to someone who is like one-hundred percent African from the darkest place where they are not wearing any clothes all day and they have developed all of that melanin to protect themselves from the sun, even the term Black is weird,” Rogan said.
On Sunday, Spotify CEO Daniel Ek announced that the platform would take additional precautions for any podcasts discussing COVID-19 and related material. With Arie mentioning Rogan’s controversial statements about race, Spotify may have to go back to the drawing board.
