Jay Dee's protege unveils a very different side of the late producer's sound

Weeks out from the release of his solo debut, Young RJ is proving he's assembled a fittingly legendary cast for Blaq Royalty.

On his latest single, "Motion," RJ rhymes over a curiously uncharacteristic J Dilla production that's more late-90s commercial rap and r&b charts than patented super-swing, more Jermaine Dupree than Jay Dee (a track he'd "been sitting on," as he notes to XXL.) It features scratches from the mighty Statik Selektah, words from Joyner Lucas and Early Mac. RJ, a fellow Detroit native, was mentored by the late producer during his Motor City stay, and later, joined his hometown heroes in Slum Village. The track arrives as a follow-up to "Issues" with BJ The Chicago Kid, the Pete Rock-produced "WAIT" and the lead-off solo single, "HUH." You can hear it below.
