John Witherspoon Says ‘The Boondocks’ Is Coming Back

The actor confirmed the news during a recent appearance on The Joe Rogan Experience podcast.

After Aaron McGruder offered a vague response on the return of his popular cult television series The Boondocks several months ago, John Witherspoon has now also hinted at the show’s return.

During a recent appearance on The Joe Rogan Experience podcast, Witherspoon, who portrays Robert “Grandad” Freeman, was with his son J.D. Witherspoon, where he discussed how being himself got him the role on the animated TV series.

“When you’re acting just be yourself,” Witherspoon. “I’m on the cartoon, what is it, The Boondocks? I didn’t change my voice for The Boondocks, I did that. And they’re coming back. The Boondocks is coming back.”

From there, Witherspoon doesn’t offer any other details on when exactly the show will be returning.

In a previous interview, McGruder had hinted at bringing the show back, saying that “It’s close” to returning. In that same interview, McGruder also spoke about the show’s infamous R. Kelly episode resurfacing amid the release of Lifetime’s Surviving R. Kelly documentary, as well as the sexual assault and abuse charges the artist has been hit with since.

“R. Kelly was a very slow-moving cultural thing that took place over years and years and years. And there was a lot of time for everyone to really think about it and mull it over and decide how they felt,” McGruder said. “We live in the era now where we don’t do that anymore. We don’t wait for the judge and jury. We make our decisions quick. It’s a very, very different time. And I think a lot of people are trying to reconcile their older selves and their R. Kelly fandom.”
