Mixtape Monday: Run DMC x The Beastie Boys, Cut Chemist, Dam-Funk + More!
We sure hope you're ready for another Mixtape Monday, because the train is about to leave the station. Fueled by that lovely extra hour of sleep (and plenty of Halloween candy), we've compiled one of the more creative an unorthodox roundups in quite some time. It all kicks off with one of the shortest (and greatest) mixes we've ever heard, and continues with cuts old and new, East Coast and West Coast, familiar and super-strange. You'll hear the works of Cut Chemist, Dam-Funk and DJ Bacon amongst others, so get on up and get yourself some.
The fall marks a somewhat somber time in hip-hop, with the passings of both Jam Master Jay and MCA both marking the calendar. To try and tally up all of the brilliant, genre-advancing releases by these two men would be almost impossible, but DJ Bacon apparently isn't scared of anything. He's put together RUN-BST Megamix, a short but unbelievably intricate mixtape of samples taken exclusively from Run DMC and Beastie Boys cuts. Breaks, chord changes and even familiar scratches are in this one, and according to Bacon himself the brief joint took six months to make. But that's not all--it's also a mixtape for a crucial cause:
Released on the anniversary of Jam Master Jays passing, all profits from the release will be donated back to the Jam Master Jay and Adam Yauch foundations to further the legacy they created and invest in future music and community projects the foundations are supporting. Particularly music projects for youth.
This one's for MCA, Jam Master Jay and DMC's own Larry Smith, so turn it up and travel back in time to another time--and another state of mind.
There's seemingly nothing that Cut Chemist can't do with a pair of decks, and if you need to see it for yourself, be our guest. Often known for his dips into rare Brazilian vinyl, the selector has gone Continential this time around and pulled up a batch of strange and gorgeous French synth and drum machine funk out from the LP and cassette bin. It's been chopped and blended into a seamless dance mix that will most definitely leave you sweating and craving a couple of croissants.

Generations of West Coast funk collided when Dam-Funk paid a visit to Joe Kay's studio on one of the most-recent installments of Soulection Radio. Dam was described during the show as "the real ambassador of modern funk," and he made it his diplomatic mission to play some of the most vibrant and unflinchingly dirty stuff we've heard in quite some time. It all starts off futuristic and ends up a modern classic, so don't delay and get yourself some now.
The French funk theme continues, it seems. This is a very good thing. Walla P took control of Music is My Sanctuary over the weekend and provided us with a polychromatic groove session for the ages. From the very first opening stutter-kicks of Temu's "Voyage Funktastique" it's very clear that it's oh so very on with this one. Put the top up, light one, and roll.

A newcomer to Mixtape Monday, Alaya Radio knocked it out of the park with future-soul performances from Tobias and Babel. It's uptempo, a bit house-inspired and full of gorgeous instrumentals, and might be just the thing you need to make it through to the end of the day. From all of us to all of you, keep moving to it.
