Director Kahlil Joseph's gorgeous short film for Flying Lotus' 2012 album Until The Quiet Comes reached a career-changing achievement by receiving the Special Jury Award for Short Film at this year's Sundance Film Festival. The four-minute clip is set to the backdrop of three standout songs off Lotus' album and weaves together a tragic, hyper-realistic narrative through Lotus' seamless production - making it an obvious selection for one of Okayplayer's Best Videos of 2012. Joseph, a member of creative collective What Matters Most, succeeded in creating a visual piece that fits the intricately-nuanced style of Flying Lotus and is highlighted by Storyboard P'seerie posthumous dancing amongst neighborhood onlookers. Filmed and set in the Nickerson Gardens housing projects of Lotus' native Los Angeles, both the video and the album Until The Quiet Comes exemplify what the best kind of creative risk-taking and genre-bending can deliver, so it's definitely exciting to see a young director like Joseph receive some shine from an industry authority such as Sundance.
