Slum Village - "Feelin Good" (intro) live at St. Andrews Hall, Detroit ca. 1996

House Shoes is back in a Detroit state of mind with this next J Dilla breakdown on the Bling47 Breaks series. This one will be particularly mindbending for Dilla & Slum Village fanatics, because the track in question–”Feelin Good” has never been released even on beat tape form, having only seen the light of day (well, the light of club) at local SV shows in the mid-90s (rare footage of a disastrous, yet historic show at Detroit’s legendary St. Andrews Hall AKA The Shelter, circa 1995-96 is included in the breakdown, and speaking on behalf of Shoes: you’re welcome). The sample Dilla flipped is, of course, an extremely rare cover of “Feelin Good” (made famous by Nina Simone) and the resulting Slum Vill beat represents late Golden Era/early Dilla-dynasty hip-hop at it’s finest.
