Master P Thinks Prodigy Deserved More Than a Name-Drop at The BET Awards

“They probably don’t even know who Mobb Deep is”

Master P has never been one to mince his words. And he’s not one to make a public spectacle for its own sake. So when the icon decides its time to speak up, the world should take heed and know that it’s a sincere transmission.

Last night, The BET Awards broadcast was the weekend’s all-star primetime cap. For the memorial portion of the program, Tyrese took the stage to solemnly run down a list of those artists whose lives and careers were cut too short, a pretty standard, cover-your-ass routine for a network giant with an awards show. The No Limit founder and chief took umbrage at the manner in which the network chose to acknowledge the late Prodigy, who died last week following his hospitalization for sickle-cell-related complications after a Las Vegas show with Havoc as Mobb Deep.

The No Limit legend takes the awards show and network to task for what he believes was an insincere tribute to an infamous career and impact in hip-hop, defiantly claiming “they probably don’t even know who Mobb Deep is” after expressing how Prodigy and Havoc probably couldn’t even get booked last week. To be fair, BET would have had to pull a Prince-level tribute event in order to do this right, but they also had three months of prep to execute and the perfect example of an award show rushing it for the sake of ratings and getting brutally dragged for it. That said, Prodigy deserved more than a name-drop.

Watch Master P explain why he did not, and may never, attend the BET Awards below.
