Free-Agent Safety Eric Reid Files Collusion Grievance Against the NFL

Ex-San Francisco 49ers safety Eric Reid — who repeatedly knelt with Colin Kaepernick during the anthem two years ago — has filed a filed a collusion grievance against the NFL. Reid, who became a free agent in March, has not been able to sign with an NFL team.

According to ESPN, Reid is being represented by the attorney who represented Kaepernick, Mark Geragos. Allegedly, Reid’s grievances are similar to Kaepernick’s; the two players, despite being in or near the prime of their respective career — Reid is 26 and Kap is 30 — have not been able to get employment with a team.

Reports leaked that Cincinnati Bengals took a meeting with Reid. During the meeting Reid was asked if he would continue to protest, he said no. Bengals still remain the only team to take a meeting with the player.

After the news came out on Wednesday, the NFL Players Association released a statement:

“Our union is aware that Eric Reid and his legal representatives filed a collusion claim, which will be heard through the arbitration process as spelled out in our collective bargaining agreement…Our union supports Eric and we are considering other legal options to pursue.”
