"This morning, the President had a call with James Shaw Jr. to commend his heroic actions and quick thinking last month at a Waffle House in Tennessee," White House spokesperson Raj Shah told reporters at the daily White House briefing, according to CNN. "Mr. Shaw saved lives when he wrestled a gun from an active shooter who had open fired."

Shaw was with his friend Brennan McMurry at a Waffle House in Antioch, Tennessee, when 29-year-old Travis Reinking opened fire in the restaurant with an AR-15 rifle. Shaw said he jumped toward the bathroom and Reinking shot in his direction, with the bullet grazing Shaw.

As Reinking came through the bathroom door, Shaw realized he had to reload, and used the opportunity to take the gun away from Reinking.

"I grabbed the gun and kept it down. He had one hand on it. I pulled it away and threw it over the bar," Shaw said. After a brief tussle, Shaw pushed the gunman out the door, with Reinking walking out of the restaurant following the altercation. Shaw Jr. suffered a gunshot wound and burns from grabbing the gun's barrel.

The Waffle House shooting left four people deadTaurean C. Sanderlin, Joe Perez, Akilah Dasilva and DeEbony Groves. All four victims were under the age of 30.

Shaw has been called a hero following the incident and praised not only for his bravery but for raising money for the victims and their families.

As CNN notes, Shaw previously told CNN correspondent Van Jones earlier this month he had not yet heard from the President.

"I know he has a busy agenda, a busy schedule," he said. "Maybe he just hasn't got around to me. Maybe my time is coming."
