On Tuesday, Brooklyn MC Rowdy Rebel was released from prison after serving six years behind bars. The GS9 member was arrested and charged with conspiracy, attempted murder, attempted assault, reckless endangerment and criminal possession of a weapon.
In exchange for a plea deal, Rowdy and Bobby Shmurda pleaded guilty and was sentenced to six to seven years.
“They offered me five [years] and offered Rowdy 12,” Shmurda said in a 2016 interview with Complex. “They said the only way they’ll give him seven is if I took seven too. So, you know, I had to take one for the dawgs.”
The two MCs served two years of their sentences while waiting for trials. After a recent parole hearing, Bobby was denied early release. He will likely serve until December 11, 2021. According to multiple reports, the denial stemmed from allegedly attempting to smuggle a “sharp metal object” into Rikers Island.
Despite the violations, Bobby plans to turn a new leaf upon his release and commit to community and public outreach. In his latest parole hearing, he revealed he was planning to get his GED and launch a mentorship program for troubled youth.
“When I get home, I’ve been thinking about getting into politics and everything because this thing gotta stop,” he said in an interview with REVOLT. “I’m ready to get into social injustice and start protesting. I’m about to really be getting in tune with [this] because it’s crazy what the system is doing and how it’s not even following its own laws.”
