After four long years and four nights of waiting, America finally has a new president. After securing the states of Michigan and Wisconsin, Joe Biden won the presidency after a late victory in Pennsylvania.
CNN projected that Biden will be the 46th president of the United States after winning Pennsylvania, which put him over the 270 electoral votes needed to win.
In the days following the election, it became clear that mail-in votes would make the difference for Biden. With that fact becoming more evident, Donald Trump filed lawsuits in multiple states, attempting to stop polling staff from counting the votes. The attempt was unsuccessful in Michigan, where Biden won by a margin of less than three percentage points.
In just a day, Trump’s lead in Pennsylvania faded from 10 percentage points to less than two, with less than 115,000 votes separating the two candidates.
“Counties are furiously at work,” said Kathy Boockvar, Pennsylvania’s secretary of state, “it is looking like we’re ahead of schedule…unless it is super close, I don’t see them making this or breaking this one way or another. But in the meantime, we are going to be counting every ballot.”
Trump’s effort was mildly successful in Pennsylvania after a state appellate court granted his campaign’s requests to give election observers better access to areas where workers counted ballots. Republican observers will be allowed to watch the counting process from six feet away, as opposed to 20 feet in the Philadelphia canvassing area.
Battleground states like Arizona, Georgia, Nevada, and Pennsylvania were the last frontiers as Biden claimed victory in Michigan, Wisconsin, and Maine. Biden is also expected to win Arizona, Georgia, and Nevada, too.
