Issa Rae Announces ‘Insecure’s Next Season Will Be its Last

Issa Rae thanked fans for their “tremendous support.”

The critically-acclaimed HBO series Insecure is about to wrap things up. On Wednesday, the show’s co-creator and star Issa Rae announced that its upcoming fifth season will be the final season.

“We always planned to tell this story through five seasons,” Issa told Deadline. “But we couldn’t have made it without the tremendous support of our audience.”

Issa Rae and Prentice Penny based the comedy off of Rae’s Awkward Black Girl YouTube sketches. In 2020, the show earned eight Primetime Emmy Award nominations for its fourth season. For her portrayal of the show’s protagonist, Issa, Rae earned two Golden Globe Award nominations in 2017 and 2018: one each year for Best Actress in a Television Series, Musical, or Comedy.

“Prentice and I are so grateful that HBO believed in our show from the beginning,” Issa continued. “And kept faith in us to see our vision through the end. I feel blessed beyond measure to bring our characters’ stories to an end, on-screen at least.”

The fifth season of Insecure is expected to begin production later this month. HBO executive vice president Amy Gravitt released a statement praising the show’s cast and crew for their work.

“Issa has turned insecurity into an iconic form of comedy,” Gravitt said. “The show is as incisive as it is heartfelt, and it has resonated strongly with its audience because of the deeply personal work that Issa, Prentice, Melina (Matsoukas), the cast and the writers have put into it. This talented team has conceived a brilliant final season for Insecure and we look forward to having many more stories to tell with this singular group of collaborators.”

Issa’s co-star Yvonne Orji recently signed on with Disney+ to produce First Gen, a half-hour comedy based on her experiences growing up as a first-generation Nigerian-American.
