Common To Play Planned Parenthood Benefit On Inauguration Weekend

Common is set to perform at a Planned Parenthood benefit show a day before Donald Trump‘s presidential inauguration.

The Show Up! benefit will be taking place at Washington D.C.’s 9:30 Club on Friday, January 19. Monica Simpson, the Executive Director of SisterSong, the National Women of Color Reproductive Justice Collective, will be serving as the host for the event.

Alongside Common will be indie rock band The Nationals, as well as other special guests that will be announced as the event date gets closer. Limited tickets to the benefit show are free of charge, and available through the organizations participating in the event.

Along with the Show Up! benefit, another event will be happening in D.C. the day before Trump’s inauguration. Titled Peace Ball: Voices of Hope and Resistance, the event will take place at the National Museum of African American History and Culture, and will be presented by Busboys and Poets.

The Peace Ball touts itself as “A gathering to celebrate the accomplishments and successes of the past 4 years and the vow to continue to be the change we want to see in the world.” Tickets for the event have already sold out.

The show will feature special performances from Solange and Esperanza Spalding, as well as other guests a part of the nonpartisan event that include: Angela Davis, Van Jones, Danny Glover, Alice Walker and many others. All exhibits will be open during the event as well (which will surely please those that have yet to see the museum, and thought that they would have to wait until after March to check it out).

Unlike both the Show Up! benefit and the Peace Ball, Trump has been having a difficult time getting performers to be a part of his inauguration. The first artist to be tied to the event was teen opera singer Jackie Evancho. Since then other acts have joined including the Rockettes, the Mormon Tabernacle Choir and the Talladega Marching Tornadoes.
