The IGOR rapper touched on not feeling accepted in the rap industry during his acceptance speech.

Tyler, the Creator has won the Best Rap Album at the 2020 Grammys for IGOR.

During his acceptance speech for his first-ever Grammy, he first thanked his mother who was standing next to him. He also shared that she did a great job raising him. Up next he went on to thank his managers who “took a seed and watered it.” He then shared that he’s extremely grateful for his friends and family who have trusted his ideas and “hyper-active energy” for years.

Later on in his speech he made sure to address the fact that he never really felt accepted in rap but his fans standing by him helped him keep going. Tyler even went on to dig a bit deeper on not feeling accepted, he shared here that he always looked to Pharrell Williams as a source of inspiration.

On Pharrell he shared:

“I don’t know if he’s here but I really want to thank Pharrell Williams. Growing up feeling left of center to what I was seeing on [television] that man has allowed me to be comfortable with myself and has opened up doors that you guys cannot imagine before I met him and when I met him.”

In the press room after he accepted his award, Tyler also touched on Kobe Bryant’s recent passing. “It was heavy, especially just being here in LA and being at the Staples Center. Within a short period of time with him and Nipsey, and if you’re from Los Angeles depending on what sector you’re in that shit is really, really heavy.”

IGOR was critically acclaimed and was also widely known for the single “EARFQUAKE” featuring Playboi Carti. In 2019, the rapper headlined his own IGOR tour and also performed at his very own Camp Flog Gnaw Festival at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles California. The two-day event featured performances by Drake, FKA Twigs, Summer Walker, and more.
