Logic Explains the Delay of His Madlib Album, ‘MadGic’

Logic says that his collaborative album with Madlib, entitled MadGic, was caused by beats that Madlib made when she was on magic mushrooms.

The MadGic collaborative project from Logic and Madlib might take a little longer to arrive. Since announcing the project, the two have released a series of singles, including “Mars Only Pt. 3,” “Mafia Music” and “Raddest Dad.” While recently visiting The Zane Lowe Show on Apple Music,

Logic, real name Sir Robert Bryson Hall II, gave an explanation behind the album’s delay. According to him, the album is “finished” but there’s been a pause in the release due to sample clearances issues. The cause? Madlib having a magic mushroom trip.

Hall also shared that the project can be credited to Eothen “Egon” Alapatt, Madlib’s business partner and former Stones Throw Records executive, as Alapatt sent Hall a stockpile of Madlib beats.

“We did that in a weekend and Egon sent me basically every Madlib beat that he’s ever done,” he said. “I mean gigs and gigs and gigs from 2005. I went through and made my perfect album of all my favorite beats, then I just rapped on them all. This is a year ago.

“Madlib comes over and he’s like, ‘Yo, Bobby, this is crazy.’ I was like, ‘Really? You like it?’ He’s like, ‘I love it.’ I’m like, ‘Wow!’ He’s like, ‘There’s just one thing … I don’t remember any of these fucking samples.’ He’s like, ‘We can’t clear it. I was on mushrooms 15 years ago when I made this beat. I don’t know.’”

Logic also said that he found a solution in taking his “dope raps” and putting them on new beats from Madlib, along with remaking instrumentals with unknown samples, referencing his  “In My Lifetime” collaboration with Action Bronson.

“It’s really not that deep and it’s gonna be amazing, and maybe we’ll release those demos for free one day,” he continued. “Anyway, Action was on that, and on that beat, me and Madlib actually produced it together. That was one of the samples that he was like, ‘I don’t know.’ I remade the beat, but I’m glad it turned out the way it did.”
