Rap veteran Lil Wayne is taking ‘Tha Carter’ on the road. On Tuesday (January 31), Live Nation announced that the New Orleans-raised rapper will embark on the 14-date ‘Welcome to Tha Carter Tour’ in April, with stops in Minneapolis, Chicago, Detroit, Boston, Philadelphia and more before concluding in Atlanta.
The tour announcement also comes ahead of The Recording Academy’sBlack Music Collective pre-Grammy event, where Lil Wayne will receive the prestigious Global Impact Award for his personal and professional achievements in the music industry. Also receiving the award are Dr. Dre, Missy Elliott and Epic Records CEO Sylvia Rhone. The awards ceremony will be held on February 2 at the Hollywood Palladium, one day prior to the 65th Annual Grammy Awards. First-time Grammy Award nominee Adam Blackstone is on board as the ceremony’s musical director and Recording Academy Board of Trustees Vice Chair Rico Love will lead the event.
“I am so thrilled to honor and celebrate these four giants in the music industry,” Recording Academy CEO Harvey Mason Jr. said in a statement. “Last year’s inaugural event was such a highlight during GRAMMY Week and now with Dre, Missy, Wayne and Sylvia there to pay tribute to this year, it’s definitely going to be another night to remember. I continue to be proud of the work of our Black Music Collective as it’s a vital part of what we do here at the Academy.”
Lil Wayne, 40, last released 2020 album Funeral and is slated to soon release Tha Carter VI and I Am Not A Human Being III. The 5-time Grammy-winner was recently featured in the House Party reboot, with additional cameos from Snoop Dogg, Tinashe, Lena Waithe, LeBron James and more.
Tickets go on sale Friday, February 3 at 10 AM local time via Live Nation.
