DJ Critical Hype has returned. On Tuesday, the blend master released his latest mixtape on Audiomack. The tape, In Search Of…Cole combines production from The Neptunes with vocals from J. Cole.
Critical Hype got Dreamville’s blessing for the project. In an interview with Genius, Critical Hype revealed that he reached out to Dreamville president Ibrahim Hamad, who provided unreleased Acappella raps from Cole. Stream the project below.
“I thought it would be nice to give a different perspective of Cole’s style and flows over different production,” he said. “Cole was pictured in the studio with Pharrell at the beginning of his career…I don’t know why it never came to fruition, but I thought it would be dope to hear Cole over some classic Neptunes beats.”
Stream the 30-track project below. The vocals range from Cole’s earlier mixtapes like The Warm Up to his studio albums. Previous DJ Critical Hype Mixes include More 9th, blending Drake vocals with 9th Wonder production, and Supa Dupa Link, which blends Goldlink vocals with Missy Elliot instrumentals. “Neptunes have their typical sound,” Critical Hype continued, “but they also have some rock sounds. So I tried to implement at least a few of those. I have three or four beats that are not typical hip-hop beats on the mix. That’s different because my previous mixes have been all hip-hop.”
