After years of impromptu beat battles, Swizz Beatz and Timbaland‘s Verzuz series took the music industry by storm after the COVID-19 pandemic shut down live music venues. After a successful first season, Swizz and Timbaland are looking for suggestions on matchup for the second go-round.
“Who you want to see in season 2?” Swizz posted on Instagram Tuesday. “Stay tuned all the way in.”
The first season saw record increases in streaming numbers for all artists involved. After the series rose in popularity, the two producers signed a deal with Apple Music to bring the battles to a more streamlined platform.
Nielsen Music and MRC Data’s mid-year report for 2020 tracked the participating artists’ combined catalog streams from two days before the battles, then compared them to the day after the battles. The study showed Erykah Badu and Jill Scott’s May 9 battle increased the two artists’ streaming numbers by 217 percent. Beenie Man and Bounty Killer’s matchup on May 24 raised their totals by 216 percent. Babyface and Teddy Riley’s maligned battle boosted their stats by 90 percent.
In the wake of the highly-popular battles, many artists have campaigned for their own matchups. T.I. and 50 Cent have gone back and forth over a potential matchup, with 50 scoffing at the notion. More recently, Quavo of the Migos has proposed a friendly battle with Rae Sremmurd. In the meantime, head over to Swizz Beatz’ Instagram page and comment with the battles you’d like to see.
Stay tuned for further updates about the forthcoming Verzuz Season 2.
