On Christmas Day, 2009, Tyler the Creator released his first album, Bastard. The controversial project served as a springboard for Odd Future’s success. On its tenth anniversary, Tyler reflected on its creation.
“Christmas 2009 I released my first album Bastard on zshare to 46 people. I had ideas, an unmeasurable amount of energy and wanted to piss off/get a reaction from anyone who had ears. I’d like to say Syd and Travis opening their home up to me and my ideas was my real big break.”
He continued by detailing the creation of specific tracks. Regarding “Pigs Fly,” for example: “I was trying to make my version of a Sade song, [it] was recorded on some stairs cause my grandma was sleep. I had such a dark sense of humor and hoped it bled through the outrageous shit I was saying. Everybody was so free. No complaints. All Safe. Not trying to make ‘good’ music, just making.”
Additionally, Tyler shared how his vision for tracks from Bastard would go on to influence his newer work.
“I love listening to these old beats and pointing out what I was trying to do that I’ve perfected now. “New Magic Wand” [from IGOR] is really just the perfected idea of “French.” 10 years later and still being fixated on the same idea is mutual but once perfected that closure allows new ground to be explored with full attention.”
