Stevie Wonder Dismisses Kanye West’s Slavery Comments As “Foolishness”

Stevie Wonder has joined a number of celebrities that have spoken out against Kanye West‘s recent remark that slavery was a choice.

“Honestly, you know your history, you know that’s not true,” Wonder said when asked by TMZ about West’s controversial statement. “If you know the truth, you don’t listen to foolishness.”

Wonder was also asked if he would attend a proposed Racial Summit hosted by Donald Trump, to which he responded with a flat out “No.”

Last week, West appeared at the TMZ Newsroom when he made the statement that slavery was a choice.

“When you hear about slavery for 400 years. For 400 years? That sounds like a choice,” the rapper said. “Like, you was there for 400 years and it was all of y’all?”

The controversial remark led to an argument between West and Red Pill podcast host Van Lathan.

“Kanye, you’re entitled to your opinion, you’re entitled to believe whatever you want. But there are real-life consequences behind everything you just said,” Lathan said. “…Frankly, I’m disappointed, I’m appalled, and I’m unbelievably hurt by the fact that you have morphed into something that, to me, is not real.”

Following the argument, Lathan spoke out on why he called out West for his comments.

“It’s crippling to see what’s happened,” he said to TIME. “I am my ancestors, I am their survival, I am their will. I am the descendant of slaves who refused to die and we all are if you’re black and in America. Any speech that is used to weaken them and make them culpable for the wretched and putrid circumstances, I don’t feel like I could really tolerate that.”
