Rare JAY-Z Trading Card From 2006 Just Broke an Auction Record

Topps, JAY-Z, and the NBA collaborated on the trading card for the 2006-2007 season.

In the past few months, the world of collectibles–digital and otherwise–has experienced an influx of newcomers. Non-fungible tokens are slowly becoming a household name, and collectors are looking to make bank off their prized possessions. On Tuesday, a rare JAY-Z artifact broke an auction record. A trading card, produced by Topps and the National Basketball Association, has now sold for over $100,000 at the Goldin Auctions’ monthly card sale.

The starting bid for the card was just $500. A whopping 49 bids later, however, and the price had jumped to a staggering $105,780. The sale price is an all-time record for any non-sports or non-trading-card-game card at auction.

The card features an image of JAY-Z in the Kingdom Come-American Gangster era, as well as an authentic signature. The card was produced as a part of Topps’ “Signs of Stardom” series.

The entire auction brought in a total of $8.5 million in total. Back in February, two Michael Jordan rookie cards sold for $738,000 each. Recently, Jay sold half of his champagne brand Armand de Brignac–or as we know it, Ace of Spades–to LVMH for an estimated $300 million. The LVMH conglomerate includes the Louis Vuitton, Moet, and Hennessy brands. Additionally, he’s sold his controlling stake in the Tidal streaming platform to Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey for nearly $300 million. The recent business moves have grown his net worth 40 percent, according to Forbes.

Stay tuned for further updates regarding JAY-Z’s business decisions.
