After Years of Anticipation, the First ‘Dune’ Trailer Has Arrived

Dune is finally set to hit theaters on December 18.

At long last, the first look at the Dune film adaptation has arrived. The movie, adopted from the monumental 1965 science fiction novel written by Frank Herbert of the same name, stars Timothée Chalamet, Rebecca Ferguson, Zendaya, and more. Denis Villenueve, director of Blade Runner 2049Sicario, and Arrival, wrote, directed, and produced the movie. View the full trailer below.

Originally written in two parts for Analog magazine, the novel is one the world’s best-selling science fiction novels. The story is set in the interstellar future, following Paul Atreides, whose father recently accepted a stewardship, in which he’ll supervise a mining operation on the planet Arrakis. The planet is home to a drug called melange, also known as “the spice,” which enhances mental capacity, extends life expectancy, and provides its user the awareness required to navigate space.

Dune is the first of six novels in its saga. In 1984, noted filmmaker David Lynch wrote and directed an adaptation of the first novel. In the early 2000s, the Sci-Fi Channel launched a miniseries inspired by the novel. The book inspired computer games, board games, songs, and also a series of prequels and sequels co-written by Herbert’s son Brian. Since 2009, planets from the novel have been adopted for real-life features on Saturn’s moon Titan.

Chalamet plays Paul Atreides in this adaption, while Josh Brolin–who most recently played Thanos in the Marvel Cinematic Universe–plays his mentor Gurney Halleck. The film hits theaters on December 18. Stay tuned for further updates regarding streaming options.
