NYPD Planning Increased Presence for ‘Joker’ Premiere Weekend

Concerns have arisen due to the film’s graphic violence and the July 2012 shooting in Aurora, Colorado at the premiere of The Dark Knight Rises.

NYPD sources tell Deadline that the department plans to station cops at theaters around the city for the Joker opening weekend screenings. Chief of Patrol Rodney Harrison reportedly informed officers about these plans earlier in the week. According to an NYPD official, however, these plans now include additional undercover officers deployed inside the screenings.

“This is 360-degree policing approach to ensure safety for ticket buyers in their seats, as well as on the streets,” the source told Deadline. “If something happens inside one of the screenings, we intend to be able to pacify the situation quickly and conclusively.”

An NYPD spokesperson said there are no specific or credible threats at this time. Out of respect for the victims of the 2012 shooting, Warner Bros. has chosen to not show Joker in Aurora, Colorado.
